Gary Judge

Gary Judge, a New Zealander, has been living in Japan for 30 years. He has been teaching English and began to write and publish books.

He began with two non-fiction works–The Timeline History of the English Language and Understanding the Japanese. More recently he began taking his many short story manuscripts and publishing them.

His close proximity to locations in which significant historical events took place, inspired him to create fiction works set in old Japan. So far he has released a trilogy of historical drama stories, set in the Edo Period of Japan, called The End of Edo. The three parts are: The Kabuki Murders, Dragon on the Mountain and Day of Consequence. Many more stories are in the pipeline and should emerge in the near future.

On a personal side, Gary lives in Yokohama, Japan, with his wife, two children, and two dogs. He loves riding his motorbikes, swimming in the sea, hiking, photography and, of course, writing.

The Glossary of English Derivations has been written as an aid for people who, striving to fully understand words they are checking in a dictionary, also study the word’s derivation. Clarifying word derivations greatly enhance, not only a single word’s meaning, but even the overall understanding of the language.
Dictionary derivations, however, are often complicated and not easily grasped. This book has been designed to help students overcome this barrier by presenting a simplified, easy-to-grasp glossary of derivational terms.
This glossary, however, goes much further than that. To help students visualize the influences and changes over the centuries, timelines, maps, charts and illustrations have been provided. Their purpose is to give students, when needed, imagery to go with the explanations.
Based on the author’s earlier publication, The Timeline History of the English Language, this handbook can be used as a rapid reference to clarify word origins, but also presents a deeper understanding of the history of our language.
