Several of the B vitamins work together and depend on each other for their effects. Many are coenzymes which help trigger the millions of chemical reactions that keep your body in good health.
VITAMIN B1 is a co-factor for the metabolism of carbohydrates, which turns the food into energy. It also plays an important role in nerve transmission. VITAMIN B2 is part of the electron transport that produces cellular energy. It is needed to make red blood cells and like vitamin B1 plays a crucial role in neurotransmission. VITAMIN B3 takes part in over fifty metabolic processes that turn carbohydrates and fat into energy. VITAMIN B5 (PANTOTHENIC ACID) is a component of coenzyme A (CoA), which is required for chemical reactions that generate energy from fat, carbohydrates, and proteins. It also is needed for normal neurotransmission. VITAMIN B6 plays a key role in our energy production process. Without it, oxygen could not be transported via the blood to cells to make the energy molecule ATP. Vitamin B6 also is used to convert carbohydrates and protein to energy. VITAMIN B12 is an essential energy vitamin, a component of red blood cells. Vitamin B12 is also necessary for normal nerve function. BIOTIN is one of the agents that converts food into energy by metabolizing fats and carbohydrates into glucose and breaking down proteins into amino acids. CHOLINE controls the deposition of fat, allowing the body to store it efficiently or tap it immediately as an energy source for muscle use. It is also a building block for the neurotransmitter acetyl-choline. INOSITOL helps transport fats to be used as energy. It acts as a mild “anti-anxiety” agent because it positively affects nerve transmissions. PABA is sometimes used to help with anxiety and panic attacks. It is a constituent of folate and helps in the formation of red blood cells.*
